How Do You Celebrate 100?
Sharing lunch with a group of solo consultants yesterday, I mentioned that this would be issue #100 of the Working Solo Minute. I asked, "What should I write about?"
The answers came fast and furious (thanks Leslie, Thaler, Kim, Margi, Terre, and Karen):
1. Celebrate the mental discipline.
When I began writing the Working Solo Minute in January 2008, I intentionally named the files with a three-digit numerical coding, thinking that some day I might make it to 100. The mental process of collecting ideas and putting them into a 60-second newsletter focused on delivering value has taught me a lot about how I think, how I plan, and what style works best for this format. If you've been tempted to start a similar project, I encourage you to dive in. I certainly didn't have everything worked out when I began. I just take a deep breath each week and try to figure out what news, information, or advice would serve soloists best.
2. Celebrate the achievement.
The thought of sitting down and writing 100 newsletters is a bit overwhelming. But bit by bit, the issues took form, assembled in an online archive. (You can check out all the past issues here.) As soloists, we often don't give ourselves credit for accomplishments. Instead, we're off to the next thing on our never-ending To-Do list. If you've recently completed a hard-won task, share the news with a peer, and take a moment to cheer. If we don't celebrate our own -- and each other's --victories, who will?
3. Celebrate sharing one's ideas with the world.
I believe that everyone on the planet has a duty to make the world a better place by the time they leave. The best way to do that is to share your unique gifts with the world. For 100 weeks it has been my choice to publish the insights I've gleaned from my years as a soloist, as well as the wisdom I've gained from many others who generously offered ideas and companionship along the way. If you are shy or at a loss about what you might contribute to the world, think about the things that you would do even if no one paid you. Or the things that you can talk on and on (and on!) about, without losing steam. What captures your imagination? That's a clue to your gift. Now, go share it with the world. We're waiting.
4. Celebrate the connections.
Most of all, I want to celebrate the countless connections I've made over the past 100 issues. Thanks to all of you for being readers, and to the many who have written in over the years. Thanks, also, to the many experts who have graciously given of their time to contribute advice to make our lives more meaningful and more productive.
Each week when I hit "Send," it's an odd (yet wonderful) feeling knowing that I am connected to so many of you. Thanks for being part of this virtual community, and for sharing the journey we've all embraced -- working solo.
