One Quarter Left
Tomorrow marks the beginning of the last quarter of 2009 -- and the last 92 days of the first decade of the twenty-first century. It's a perfect time to assess progress and chart new plans. Consider:
1. What's worked best for you in 2009?
Most solo companies follow an 80/20 rule -- 80% of their revenue comes from 20% of their client base and/or 20% of their products or services. Have you determined what generates your best ROI? How can you enhance, extend, or leverage your success to date? This requires setting aside some thinking-with-pen-on-paper time. The process can reveal patterns and directions you didn't notice (or act on) previously.
2. What consistently seems to slip off your To-Do list?
Are there tasks or projects that keep hanging around on your To-Do list, but never seem to get done? If so, it's time to jettison them, accepting that they don't fit your needs or interests any more. Or, if you consider them still worthwhile, create an action plan to complete them. Having them linger only takes up mental energy every time you encounter them on your list. Assess them, decide yes or no, and free up the brain space!
3. What's on your "for the fun of it" list?
If you've been solely focused on business tasks during 2009, be sure you make time for at least one project that's just for fun. Whether it takes only a few hours, or extends over several days, it's important to replenish the creative well. October is a good month to do so, since the holidays quickly sneak up at the end of the year -- and while they may mean time away from the office, they're often not stress-free.
Make the most of every day -- in your own way.
