Looking
Back, Looking Ahead
The week between Christmas and New Year's is always one
of my favorite times of the year. With business usually in a lull, phones
quiet, and email fairly light, it's an ideal time to review the year and
plan for the months ahead. Here are some things I consider:
1. Big wins.
What were the major accomplishments of the year? It's funny how successes
from the first quarter can be easily forgotten. It's time to celebrate
and place these achievements in perspective.
2. New
connections.
What new colleagues entered your life in 2008? While there
may be some who have already become close, are there others you need
to follow up with?
3. Best
ROI.
Where did your investments of time, energy, and money
pay off this year? Most solo businesses follow the 80/20 rule: 80% of
our revenue is generated by 20% of our clients or customers. How can
you expand your relationship with the top 20% and find more like them?
4.
Lessons learned.
What were the unexpected
outcomes, blunders, or stumbles in 2008? What was learned, and
how can similar situations in the future end up with more positive results?
5.
New goals.
What are the 3 things you'd most like to accomplish in 2009? Check your "Someday,
Maybe" list. Are there items that require your attention
or projects you wish to launch?
Taking
time to consider these aspects of your solo business provides perspective
on all you've achieved, and inspiration for your year ahead. Next week we'll
look at how to chart the roadmap for 2009 in more detail.
