Why
LOL Makes Good Business Sense
The financial news is grim all around us, and it's time for
some focused LOL (lots of laughs) treatments. Why? As a soloist, it just may
save your business.
We've all heard the studies of terminal patients
who've extended their lives by watching comedy shows or listening to recordings
of comedic routines. Laughter releases positive chemicals
to the brain and increases blood flow. A Scientific
American article says it's
also good for your heart.
So, it's time for a laughter-hunt.
Here are three suggestions I discovered in Martha Beck's book, The Joy Diet , on how to inject more amusement into your life.
1. Hang out with
laughers.
In addition to intentionally seeking out humorous material (cartoons, movies,
recordings), Beck says to find colleagues who are frequent laughers, since
the chuckles spread through social contagion (like yawns). Consider it one more
reason to get out of your solo cave and connect -- with funny people.
2. Learn to laugh
for no reason.
Just as intentionally putting a smile on your face can change your attitude
when you're feeling down (try it!), laughing for no specific reason can shift
your energy, too. Fortunately, we're working solo, so it won't seem quite that
odd when we break into hysterical laughter during our work day for no apparent
cause.
3. Laugh at yourself.
This can be tough for some folks. But I've learned that once you start, you'd
be surprised at how silly all that seriousness can seem. Beck leads her clients
through an exercise that takes their biggest personal obstacle and heightens
it to absurd proportions. It breaks through the tension and provides perspective,
often generating abundant laughter.
Beck advises we should laugh at least 30 times a day. I'll be (cheerfully)
working on this in the coming weeks. How 'bout you?
